About Local Color

Steven Jenner is the originator of the concept of "local color photography."

He worked as an aerial photographer in the 1970's and 1980's photographing oil and gas pipelines from small planes and helicoptors for "big oil" and pipeline companies. These were up close, low level views of extensive areas of Alaska, five Canadian Provinces, and 26 of the "lower 48" states.

Mr. Jenner visited small communities throughout North America, landing at small airports and occassionally on grass strips. He found that these locales often contained pride of place, sometimes natural and sometimes manmade. A few of the interesting stops included Bettles, Alaska - Osage, Iowa - Red Deer, Alberta - Sandy, Oregon - Watkins Glen, New York and many, many more. One of the more colorfully named pipelines ran from Nipewan, Saskatchewan to Flin Flon, Manitoba. He began to photographically document these local highlights - from Ukrainian Orthodox churches in rural Western Canada to BBQ joints in Texas.

In 1988, Mr. Jenner founded "Local Color," a greeting card company to portray the character of individual areas, back roads and quaint countrysides in local neighborhoods. It has expanded to include college campuses, intimate cityscapes, and suburbs in many parts of the United States and Europe.

Local Color has been the nation's largest producer of handmade photographic cards for many years. Our production method creates the finest quality and most vivid color images in small runs at low cost. This enables us to keep our images up to date and provides fresh new images at all times.

We are committed to sound environmental practices and use recycled paper for all our card stock and envelopes. Our cards are made from 90% post consumer waste and 10% hemp/flax. The photo is a 4x6 original print permanently mounted in a unique embossed window.
